Library Ideas | Pinner Amy Lyons

Meet the Pinner: She goes by safesungirl on Pinterest, and her colleagues and students at Southridge High School know her as Media Specialist Amy Lyons. She established her profile and began pinning in the Fall of 2011 after a friend shared an invitation to the new social media tool.

When asked about her favorite boards, this is what Amy shared: "It has very little educational value, but I LOVE my Crazy divergent series fan board, because I made it after I read Divergent and realized that there were a lot of other 'crazy' series fans out there creating and pinning things. I am also partial to my Gator stuff board because I am a University of Florida graduate." Learn what else she told us...

How would you describe your use of Pinterest?
Pinterest is my go-to site for all things creative, whether it is library media, home decorating and organizing, parenting, holidays, fitness - whatever. The site not only holds a world of ideas and information on every topic, but links at every turn to new branches of discovery, innovation, and education.

What have you gained from using Pinterest?
I like Pinterest better than other tools because of its visual nature and because it is inherently collaborative, which is a primary focus of the media specialist's role. Pinterest is like an awesome big sister you can turn to for advice on any topic and you know can trust it because you trust the people who posted it. It functions for me as an impetus for my own creativity providing a basis for ideas that I can expand, develop and implement in my own unique way.

Can you share any advice for new Pinners?
Make as many separate boards as you want to so you can find specific items when you go back to look for them. If you pin too many things to one board, it can be difficult to locate them later.

There's more than one way to collect pins!
  • Repin from other pinners
  • Pin from websites that you frequent
  • Pin from blogs that you follow and read
  • Upload pins from your library or bookmarks

Pinnovation Invitation: Do you have a passion board like Amy's Crazy Divergent Fan Series or Gator Stuff boards? Tell us about it and share the link. If not, how might you or your students use Pinterest to share a talent or passion? Let us know in the comments below!
