Center Grove Schools Professional Development

About Center Grove Schools Professional Development:
The Center Grove Professional Development Committee started pinning about two months ago according to Marcy Buergler, Assistant Coordinator for Curriculum and Special Services. Marcy was kind enough to give us some background on how the
Center Grove Community School District group got started.

Why use Pinterest?
We were looking for ways to reach the diverse needs of adult learners, and Pinterest is accessible, convenient, and user-friendly. A bonus is that many educators already utilize Pinterest accounts, so it’s a perfect venue for professional learning. Additionally, Pinterest aligns with the vision of the Professional Development Committee to provide differentiated, meaningful, and relevant opportunities for professional growth.

How are you using Pinterest as a group?
The Professional Development committee shares the same username/password. Therefore, the group can add content to the different boards. All committee members have different professional backgrounds and areas of expertise, so we are able to find and pin quality resources and information in the relevant areas. It's our goal to eventually create original content to pin.

What have you gained from using Pinterest?
In addition to Pinterest, Center Grove uses many professional development methods including presentations, PLCs, Canvas, webinars, and Twitter. The advantage of utilizing Pinterest is that educators have access on iPads, desktops, and iPhones. Also, personalized learning paths can be created by following and creating boards/topics that are most meaningful to educators.

Can you share any advice for new Pinners?
One tip is to always check the source of the “pin” before re-pinning. Remember that anyone can “pin” and checking the reliability of the content will ensure quality resources.

Secondly, if you’re looking for a specific resource (main idea lesson, sight word activity, math app, etc.), use the search bar within Pinterest. It will help narrow the search to focus only on the specific topic.

Finally, don’t get overwhelmed. There is a plethora of information that can be daunting for even the most experienced Pinterest user. Spend time exploring and become familiar with the layout, boards, and resources. Your comfort level will increase and you’ll soon love perusing and pinning your favorite resources!
